Order "une carafe d’eau" for free, safe tap water in restaurants

Anonymous traveller

When dining at French bistros, waitstaff will ask if you want water. If you just say "water", they will bring an €8 bottle of Evian or Badoit. Specifically ask for "une carafe d’eau" (a pitcher of tap water), which is fresh, clean, and free by French law.
